The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a suspect believed to be part of a notorious gang involved in child trafficking. The suspect, whose identity has been withheld, was apprehended following intensified efforts by the police to curb the rising cases of missing persons in the region, particularly in Okpoko and Onitsha.
The suspect is reportedly a member of a syndicate that traffics children aged 13 to 16 to neighboring countries such as Ghana and Benin Republic. The arrest comes as a result of the directives issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, who has expressed deep concern over the alarming number of missing person reports in the state.
In a significant breakthrough, the police successfully rescued a victim who had been trafficked to Accra, Ghana. The rescued individual has since been safely returned to Nigeria and is currently being debriefed by authorities. The suspect is undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, as the police work to uncover the whereabouts of other victims and identify additional members of the trafficking ring.
Further updates on the investigation will be provided as developments unfold.
