The Anambra State Police Command has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a serving officer, Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was accidentally shot and killed by his 10-year-old son in Awka.

The incident occurred in the evening of Saturday, June 15, 2025, and was reportedly the result of an accidental discharge involving an AK-47 rifle assigned to the late inspector. According to preliminary investigations, the child, unaware that the firearm was loaded, pulled the trigger—fatally striking his father in the back and injuring his younger sibling on the hand.

Inspector Amechi was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The injured child is currently receiving treatment and is said to be responding well. The rifle has since been recovered, and the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, conveyed the Command’s condolences to the family and friends of the late officer.

“The Command wishes the second victim a quick recovery and condoles with the family and friends of the late Inspector Okolie Amechi,” Ikenga stated.

“Further developments will be communicated as investigations continue.”

The Command also reiterated the importance of firearm safety and responsible weapon handling within and outside official duty.
