The Anambra State Police Command has officially invited human rights activist and publisher, Mr. Harrison Gwamnishu, to provide detailed information regarding a report he made on social media about five persons allegedly missing while transiting through Anambra State.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command expressed concern over the gravity of the allegation, particularly given that no formal complaint or identification of the purported missing individuals has been received to date.
According to the statement, Gwamnishu had earlier posted online that five individuals went missing in Anambra while seeking accommodation. Following this, the Command issued a press release on May 22, 2025, calling on members of the public with useful information, especially relatives of the said individuals, to come forward.
In response to the police’s initial post, Mr. Gwamnishu was reported to have commented via the Command’s official Facebook page, stating: “Thank you. They are strangers and the family are on their way to the East. They will report today so your office can assist.”
However, the police say all efforts to get Mr. Gwamnishu to present the relatives of the alleged victims or provide further clarification have so far been unsuccessful.
The Command noted that the unverified claim has triggered public concern and cast doubt on the effectiveness of security agencies in the state. “It has brought reproach on the enthusiasm and commitment of *Ndi Anambra* to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the bad eggs in the State,” the statement read.
Despite the controversy, the Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining peace and safety across Anambra. “We shall continue to explore strategies and remain committed to consolidating on the gains in crime prevention, restoration of law and order, and the safety of lives in the State,” SP Ikenga added.
The police say they will continue investigations and appeal to anyone with useful information regarding the alleged incident to come forward.
