The Anambra State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police (CP) Nnaghe Obono Itam, has launched a proactive initiative to improve officers’ proficiency in handling gender-based violence cases. This effort includes a two-day capacity-building training held from December 17 to 18, 2024, at the Vertex View Hotel in Awka.

The training aims to strengthen the Command’s response to gender-based violence while fostering sensitivity and professionalism among law enforcement personnel. Supported by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), the program was facilitated by operatives from Vision Spring Initiatives, led by Project Director Ngozi Nwosu-Juba and her team.

Vision Spring Initiatives, a Lagos-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has been actively collaborating with security agencies and civil society organizations over the past year to provide human rights education for women and girls. During the event, the organization also donated essential tools, including computers and accessories, to aid in documenting cases handled by the Command.

CP Nnaghe Obono Itam emphasized that the training reflects the Command’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and cultivating a culture of empathy and respect within the police force. The partnership with Vision Spring Initiatives highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing societal challenges and protecting vulnerable groups.

The Command expressed gratitude to Vision Spring Initiatives for their unwavering support and the critical role they play in advancing human rights and justice.

The training underscores the Anambra State Police Command’s dedication to ensuring that officers are well-equipped to handle sensitive cases, ultimately promoting safety and justice for all citizens.
