The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists and armed robbers in Awka, recovering a pump-action gun, expended cartridges, and other incriminating items. The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Chibuike Ozoekwem and 19-year-old Favour Patrick, were apprehended by operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Unit in an uncompleted building on Onwurah Street, Awka, in the early hours of March 18, 2025.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests followed intensified security operations ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, to curb rising cases of robbery along Club Road, Awka, popularly known as Abakaliki Street. During the operation, the police recovered a pump-action gun, sixteen expended cartridges, a battle axe, and two suspected stolen phones.
A victim later identified one of the recovered phones, stating that she was robbed at gunpoint by four armed men on March 13, 2025, along Club Road. The police have since expanded their investigation to apprehend other members of the gang.
SP Ikenga assured that all suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining law and order across the state.
