The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the tragic death of a 17-year-old boy at the Onitsha Main Market. The incident, which occurred during what was described as a chaotic attempt to apprehend a suspect, also led to the recovery of an automatic pump action gun.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects—believed to be security operatives—were taken into custody by operatives attached to the Onitsha Main Market Police Division with assistance from concerned traders.
Eyewitnesses reported that the suspects opened fire indiscriminately while attempting to arrest an individual. In the process, a stray bullet fatally struck the teenage boy, sparking outrage among eyewitnesses and market stakeholders.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoiye Orutugu, has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “avoidable and unprofessional.” He immediately ordered the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a thorough and transparent investigation.
The police assured the public that justice would be served and further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
