Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, have apprehended three suspected cultists, including one who allegedly posed as a security operative. The arrests were made in the early hours of December 18, 2024, during a surveillance patrol along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway near Unizik Temporary Site.
One of the suspects, identified as 50-year-old Chidi Ekwesiri from Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area, initially claimed to be a sergeant and a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos. However, he later recanted his claim and confessed that the automatic pump-action gun found in his possession was given to him by an unidentified individual at Ukpo.
Following Ekwesiri’s confession, two other suspects were arrested and are currently being interrogated by police operatives. Additionally, a police uniform was recovered from the suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for thorough investigation. The police assured that the suspects would be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
