The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, for allegedly murdering his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station arrested the suspect on April 11, 2025, at about 1:40 p.m. The suspect was reportedly found attempting to take his own life after the fatal incident. A bloodstained axe believed to have been used in the attack was recovered at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the tragic altercation stemmed from a dispute over proceeds from a cassava business, with the suspect accusing his mother of dishonesty.

Police have since placed the suspect under close monitoring to prevent a suicide attempt, while investigations continue. He is expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.

In a separate development, operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu, acting on credible intelligence, raided a drug camp at Umuokpala Village in Orumba North Local Government Area in the early hours of the same day.

Twelve male suspects aged between 20 and 29 were arrested at the camp for selling and consuming hard drugs. Items recovered from the operation include a sizeable quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, various illicit substances, and other incriminating exhibits.

The arrested suspects—identified as Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley—have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime and ensuring public safety across the state.
