The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has praised the people of Awka for their sustained commitment to peace and active cooperation with security agencies, which he described as instrumental in enhancing safety and order within the community.
The CP made the remarks on Tuesday, 27th May 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Palace of the Traditional Ruler of Awka (Eze Uzu II), His Royal Highness Igwe Dr. Gibson Nwosu, OON. Leading a high-powered delegation of senior officers and friends of the Command, CP Orutugu emphasized the importance of community policing and lauded Awka residents for their role in fostering a crime-free environment.
“The peaceful disposition of the people of Awka, particularly during this year’s Imoka Festival, is commendable,” the CP noted.
> “Despite past experiences of miscreants disrupting festivities under the guise of celebration, Awka recorded zero incidents of violence this year—a direct result of the community’s cooperation with the police.”
During the interactive session with the royal father, palace chiefs, and other stakeholders, the Commissioner urged other communities across Anambra State to adopt similar attitudes towards peacebuilding and security collaboration. He stressed that such synergy remains vital to the State Command’s mission of maintaining law and order.
In his response, Igwe Dr. Nwosu expressed gratitude for the visit and commended the Police Command for its dedication to securing lives and property. He assured the Commissioner of the palace’s continued support and prayers for the Force’s success.
“Your visit is a great honour to our kingdom. We will continue to support the police and work together to keep our community safe,” the monarch said.
The CP’s entourage was received by notable members of the traditional council, including the Prime Minister of Awka, the Chief Security Officer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (a palace member), kingmakers, and other revered chiefs of the Awka Kingdom.
The visit underscores the growing emphasis on community-driven policing in Anambra State, with CP Orutugu advocating for inclusive stakeholder engagement to ensure lasting peace and security across all local government areas.
