Commissioner of Police (CP) Nnaghe Obono Itam reaffirmed his commitment to an all-inclusive policing system in Anambra State during a meeting held on June 6, 2024, at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka. The event brought together vigilante groups, the Hunters Association of Nigeria, and other relevant security outfits to enhance collaboration in law enforcement and public safety.
CP Itam praised the dedication and selfless service of these groups in aiding the police to curb crime in the state. He also addressed concerns about certain illegal activities among the vigilantes, such as unauthorized detention, mob actions, illegal security levies, and assaults on suspects. He urged security operatives to avoid being manipulated against the communities they are meant to protect.
The CP pledged enhanced cooperation between the police and recognized security outfits in Anambra. He proposed a State Policing Model anchored on the Police Community Policing Committee platform, aimed at unifying various security outfits for better intelligence sharing and coordinated policing.
During the interactive session, security operatives expressed their satisfaction and raised concerns, which CP Itam addressed. Hon. Tony Collins Nwabunne, Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy, commended CP Itam for the initiative and called for continued engagements of this nature, noting its unprecedented nature in the state.
The meeting saw the attendance of the Management Team of the Police Command, the State and Zonal Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), representatives from the State Security Department, the Hunters Association of Nigeria, the National President of the Town Union Association, the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, and members of the Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA), among others.
