Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) has issued a robust response to allegations circulating online regarding the purported involvement of soldiers in civilian shootings, which allegedly exacerbated vulnerability among Bokkos residents. The claims, put forth by the Coalition of Bokkos Ethnic Youth Nationalities, also included a call for the removal of the Step-Up Headquarters 2 Commander in Bokkos.

In a statement released by Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer for OPSH, the allegations were vehemently refuted. According to OPSH, the accusations are unfounded and appear to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the ongoing efforts of security agencies in combating militia groups operating in the region.

Detailing the events of April 13, OPSH explained that upon receiving distress calls, personnel swiftly responded from multiple fronts, forcing assailants to abandon their mission and flee. The attacks, which simultaneously targeted Kopnanle and Mandang Mushu in Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas of Plateau State, resulted in casualties, with one fatality and several injuries reported.

Regarding the specific incident at Kopyal Village, where allegations of soldiers killing vigilantes surfaced, OPSH clarified that security forces were not involved in any confrontation with vigilantes during the stated period. Evidence suggests that the deceased individual was killed by rival militia groups, with the discovery of ammunition in their possession casting doubt on claims of innocence.

Furthermore, the call for the removal of Colonel CY Ofurumazi, the Commander of the Step-Up Headquarters in Bokkos, was denounced as malicious by OPSH. Colonel Ofurumazi’s impartiality during the incident and his refusal to compromise neutrality were highlighted as factors potentially contributing to the desperation of petitioners seeking his removal.

In conclusion, OPSH reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the Joint Operations Area, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the public. Major Zhakom urged the public to disregard misinformation and encouraged the provision of credible information to aid in securing law-abiding citizens.

The dispute highlights the challenges faced by security forces in the region and underscores the importance of transparent communication in addressing allegations of misconduct.
