Hon. Adekunle Abdulkabir Akinlade, a prominent figure in Ogun State politics, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deep-seated internal crises, unresolved factional disputes, and institutional bias within the party’s Ogun State chapter.

In a press statement released on Monday, Akinlade stated that his decision followed “a period of deep introspection and wide-ranging consultations” with political associates, party members, stakeholders, and family. The former lawmaker and 2023 Deputy Governorship Candidate for Ogun State decried what he described as persistent neglect by the PDP’s zonal and national leadership.

According to him, “Rather than serve as a stabilizing force and neutral arbiter, the National Working Committee (NWC) chose to align with a particular faction of the party in Ogun State, effectively abandoning its constitutional responsibility to promote unity and fairness.”

He further revealed that his political group had submitted a verified membership register with over 49,000 names, which was initially accepted for the 2024 congresses but was later substituted with another faction’s list — a move he called unjust and unconstitutional.

Akinlade said the imposition of parallel congress outcomes across the 236 wards and 20 local governments in Ogun State triggered legal battles that are now pending before the Court of Appeal. He also faulted the recent PDP South West Zonal Congress for excluding his bloc, describing it as a missed opportunity for reconciliation.

“The current turmoil within the national structure of the PDP, coupled with growing defections across the federation, raises valid concerns about the future and direction of the party,” he noted.

Akinlade, who also served as the 2019 Governorship Candidate and Director-General of the Atiku/Okowa Campaign Council in Ogun State in 2023, expressed his appreciation to members of the Triple A Political Family and loyal supporters across the state.

He concluded by assuring them that his next political move would be announced in due course following further consultations and alignments.

His resignation is seen as a significant development in the evolving political landscape of Ogun State, with observers closely watching where the former PDP stalwart will pitch his tent ahead of the 2027 elections.
