In response to a viral video alleging human rights abuses at Maroko Police Station, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, AIG Fayoade M. Adegoke, has constituted a six-member panel to probe the incident. The video, which has garnered significant attention, includes claims by a woman that she was detained in a cell alongside male and under-aged individuals.
The panel, composed of a diverse group of professionals, is tasked with thoroughly investigating the allegations. Members of the panel include DCP Ajao S. Adewale, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department (ZCID), ACP Ogunsakin Gbenga, Ph.D., Officer in charge of the Zonal Intelligence Department, Mr. Emma Nnadozie, Group Crime Editor of Vanguard Newspaper, Comrade Prince Adeoye Adewunmi, a human rights activist, Ivy Kanu from TVC News, and Barrister Blessing Afe, a lawyer and social worker.
The formal inauguration of the panel will take place at 12:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the M.D. Abubakar Conference Hall, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos. The formation of this panel aligns with the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to upholding human rights and addressing gender-related concerns.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Umma T. Ayuba, emphasized that this action reflects the leadership’s ongoing dedication to accountability and transparency, ensuring that all allegations of human rights violations are properly investigated.
