Abuja was abuzz with excitement on December 7, 2024, as Makems Jewellery hosted its highly anticipated annual jewellery exhibition at the Glowing Ages Academy, Kaura District. The event attracted fashion enthusiasts and potential clients eager to explore a curated display of unique, handmade, locally-produced, and imported jewellery collections.
The exhibition highlighted Makems’ commitment to promoting local content, aligning with the Federal Government’s initiative to enhance indigenous production across sectors. From earrings and bracelets to necklaces and rings, the showcase featured designs that blend contemporary trends with vintage charm, reflecting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Business Development, Miss Temitope Adejare, emphasized Makems’ focus on locally-sourced materials to mitigate the rising costs of imported products caused by unfavorable dollar-to-naira exchange rates. “We ensure that we source local jewellery materials and create beautiful, high-quality pieces that resonate with our customers. Each design is unique, guaranteeing that our clients own a one-of-a-kind product,” she said.
Adejare revealed that Nigerian-made jewellery at the exhibition garnered significant attention due to their durability, affordability, and superior quality compared to many imported items. “Our locally-produced jewellery appeals more to clients because it is unique, durable, and designed to meet diverse tastes,” she added, noting that the products’ affordability, being priced in naira, has boosted accessibility for customers.
Beyond aesthetics, Makems is also making strides in economic development. According to Adejare, the company has created employment opportunities for Nigerians across its value chain and plans to export locally-manufactured jewellery in the future. This initiative aims to strengthen the naira through exports and support the government’s local content policy.
The exhibition provided attendees with an opportunity to purchase exquisite jewellery, network, and prepare for the festive season. “Makems works year-round to gather the best of locally-manufactured and imported designs to ensure our customers find something special for the season,” Adejare stated.
Makems Jewellery envisions becoming a household name in Nigeria, driving local content adoption while offering stylish, durable, and affordable jewellery. With a growing online presence, the company is poised to revolutionize the fashion industry, blending tradition with modernity to create timeless pieces for all.
