GTCO Sets Sights on Historic One Billion Dollar Annual Profit Under Agbaje

Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has unveiled an ambitious growth agenda, with its Group Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje, declaring that the financial institution is determined to become the first Nigerian company to record one billion dollars in annual profit.

Agbaje’s declaration ranks among the boldest corporate commitments by any Nigerian business, as it provides investors and stakeholders with a clear, measurable benchmark against which the group’s long term performance can be assessed.

The target comes as GTCO continues to post impressive financial results. The banking group recorded a historic ₦1.23 trillion profit before tax for the 2025 financial year, reinforcing its position as one of Nigeria’s strongest financial institutions.

Its impressive performance extended into 2026, with first quarter results showing ₦302.9 billion profit before tax, while its cost of risk declined sharply from 2.2 per cent to 0.2 per cent, reflecting stronger asset quality and disciplined risk management.

To accelerate its expansion strategy, GTCO is raising ₦400.5 billion through a rights issue, with the proceeds earmarked for technology upgrades and strategic acquisitions across Nigeria, Senegal and Kenya.

The planned investments are expected to deepen the group’s digital banking capabilities, strengthen operational efficiency and expand its footprint in key African markets with significant growth potential.

Beyond the financial metrics, Agbaje’s public commitment underscores a leadership philosophy anchored on transparency, accountability and measurable performance, while aligning the organisation behind a common long term objective.

Market observers believe the clearly defined profit target is likely to strengthen investor confidence by demonstrating management’s readiness to be evaluated against publicly stated goals rather than broad corporate aspirations.

The strategy also positions GTCO to take advantage of emerging opportunities across Africa’s financial services sector through innovation, capital strength and disciplined execution of its regional growth agenda.

Should GTCO attain the one billion dollar annual profit milestone, it would establish a new benchmark for corporate excellence in Nigeria, reinforce the country’s banking leadership on the continent and inspire more African companies to pursue bold, globally competitive growth ambitions.
