In a dramatic response to rising insecurity, the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) has evacuated 236 students from Jos, Plateau State, following escalating threats to lives and property.

The emergency operation was triggered by a distress call received midweek, as panic spread among students over worsening security conditions in the city.

A voice message reportedly sent by one of the affected students captured the urgency of the moment, as fear gripped the academic community and calls for immediate rescue intensified.

Acting with speed, NULASS National President, Comrade Hafiz Olufowobi, constituted a five member emergency response committee to coordinate a swift evacuation plan.

The committee, led by Vice President II Diaspora, Comrade Oluwadarasimi Lawal, immediately initiated contact with relevant authorities to secure logistics and ensure student safety.

Collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, through the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr Olawale Samuel Kappo, proved pivotal in mobilising support for the operation.

At the University of Jos, authorities provided a verified list of over 600 Lagos students, but only 236 were successfully processed for evacuation amid communication challenges and widespread anxiety.

With tensions mounting, security agencies, including the Plateau State Police Command, provided armed escort as the students were moved out of volatile areas under tight protection.

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, facilitated transportation and financial support, ensuring the students undertook the journey back home in relative comfort and safety.

The evacuees arrived Lagos on Sunday evening to a coordinated reception by top officials, as NULASS commended the government’s swift intervention and reaffirmed its resolve to prioritise student welfare in times of crisis.
