The fight against illicit drug trafficking gathered fresh momentum on Friday as the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT handed over five bags of Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Festac Area Command, in a decisive anti-narcotics operation in Lagos.
The consignment, weighing approximately 500 kilogrammes, was intercepted on February 18, 2026, during an intelligence-driven operation around Abule Osun in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. Naval authorities described the seizure as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating within the coastal corridor.
Acting on credible intelligence, the NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team reportedly stopped a suspicious van believed to be transporting illicit substances. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the concealed bags of Cannabis Sativa.
The interception, according to Adams-Aliu, underscores the heightened vigilance across maritime and adjoining communities, as security agencies intensify surveillance to disrupt criminal supply chains.
Speaking to journalists during the formal handover ceremony, the Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, said the operation reflects the Navy’s renewed operational resolve under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
He noted that the seizure demonstrates the Service’s sustained commitment to combating illegal activities within Nigeria’s maritime domain and adjoining littoral communities.
Adams-Aliu commended the professionalism and alertness of naval personnel involved in the operation, stressing that proactive intelligence gathering remains central to ongoing enforcement successes.
He further reaffirmed the Navy’s readiness to collaborate seamlessly with sister security agencies in safeguarding the nation’s coastal corridors against criminal infiltration.
The seized narcotics were subsequently handed over to the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Adejumo Gbenga Ayo, for further investigation and necessary prosecutorial action by the NDLEA.
