In a decisive move to tighten security and close loopholes exploited by criminals, the Ogun State Police Command has launched a statewide, intelligence-led crackdown on vehicles operating with illegal number plates, abused dealer (temporary) plates, and unauthorised sirens and amber lights.
The enforcement operation, which commenced this week, is being carried out simultaneously across major highways, arterial roads and urban centres in the state, signalling a renewed push by the police to curb crime and enhance public safety.
According to a statement issued in Abeokuta by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the operation was triggered by credible intelligence indicating that criminals increasingly rely on fake, altered, covered or improperly affixed number plates to evade detection and carry out crimes.
The Command disclosed that the misuse of dealer plates often deployed beyond approved timelines and guidelines has also become a growing concern, with links to offences such as robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes. As a result, vehicles found in violation are being stopped, screened, and where necessary, offenders arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws.
To ensure transparency and professionalism, specialised units including the Motor Traffic Department, the Monitoring Unit and the X-Squad have been deployed to monitor the exercise. Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers are equally supervising operations within their jurisdictions to ensure strict adherence to rules of engagement and respect for citizens’ rights.
The Commissioner of Police urged motorists to cooperate with officers, obey traffic regulations, avoid suspicious vehicles and use only recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points.
Reassuring residents, the Command stressed that the exercise is preventive rather than punitive, aimed at protecting lives, restoring public confidence and denying criminals the tools used to perpetrate crimes.
Members of the public were encouraged to report suspicious activities through the Ogun State Police Command emergency channels, including the Gateway Shield toll-free line and other designated emergency numbers.
