AIG Fayoade Warns Officers Against Prolonged Detention, Meddling In Civil Matters

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Adegoke M. Fayoade, has expressed strong displeasure over the unnecessary and prolonged detention of suspects as well as the involvement of police officers in civil disputes.

Speaking during a lecture at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, the AIG emphasized the need for professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights in police operations.

While commending officers and men of the Zone for their dedication to combating crime, Fayoade stressed that police personnel must uphold the principles of justice and fairness in the discharge of their statutory duties.

“We must maintain a high level of professionalism and ensure that suspects are not detained unnecessarily or beyond lawful limits. Delving into civil matters is also beyond our mandate and must be avoided,” the AIG cautioned.

He reminded officers that every action and decision taken in the course of their duties would be subject to accountability. He charged them to remember that their core responsibility is to protect, not violate, the rights of citizens.

The session also addressed the need to eschew corruption and unethical conduct. AIG Fayoade encouraged officers to remain proactive, effective, and people-oriented in their service to the nation.

The event, which formed part of ongoing efforts to entrench ethical policing and operational efficiency across the Zone, was rounded off with a call to officers to renew their commitment to service with integrity and professionalism.

The Zone 2 Command comprises the Lagos and Ogun State Police Commands.
