…Tinubu Insists On Open Contest As Succession Talks Stall

Reports suggesting that the All Progressives Congress has adopted a consensus candidate for the Lagos State governorship race ahead of the 2027 elections have been firmly dismissed by party insiders, who described the claims as misleading and without foundation.

Sources privy to a recent high level meeting between Bola Ahmed Tinubu and South West leaders said the issue of a Lagos governorship candidate did not arise, contrary to widespread speculation in political circles.

Multiple participants at the meeting rejected claims that Obafemi Hamzat had been endorsed as a consensus candidate, stressing that such reports were premature and not reflective of the discussions held.

According to insiders, the meeting focused primarily on reinforcing party cohesion across the South West, while also setting the stage for the forthcoming APC National Convention and broader electoral strategies.

A source at the meeting disclosed that deliberations centred on unity, mobilisation and strengthening the party’s internal structures ahead of future electoral contests, rather than zoning or candidate selection.

“There was no conversation about consensus candidates for Lagos or any other state,” one participant stated, emphasising that the gathering was strictly forward looking in terms of party stability and preparedness.

It was further gathered that the President reiterated his commitment to a transparent and competitive process, urging that all aspirants be allowed to test their popularity through established party mechanisms.

Party leaders were also charged to deepen engagement with grassroots members and the wider electorate, particularly in explaining ongoing government reforms, including measures aimed at easing the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

In addition, the President briefed attendees on the outcome of his recent visit to the United Kingdom, highlighting its expected gains for Nigeria’s investment climate and international economic partnerships.

Insiders maintained that no decision was taken regarding succession plans in Lagos, insisting that consultations within the party would continue in line with constitutional provisions guiding the emergence of candidates ahead of the primaries.
